Abstract
The prerequisites for the mass migration of the Irish arose in the XVII century. due to the brutal colonial policy of Great Britain. In the 19th century, the emigration of Irish Catholics reached its peak, as a result of which the population of Ireland was halved. The author analyzes the causes of the Great Famine (1845-1849) and its consequences, which led to massive transatlantic migration. The factors of the subsequent adaptation of Irish Catholics, institutional, cultural stigmatization and discrimination of Irish immigrants by the local population in North America are considered. The strengthening of the Irish diaspora through the formation of trade union and nationalist movements in America has played a crucial role in providing assistance for the struggle for independence of Ireland. © Любченко А.
